Brick Patios

We construct patios with paving bricks, which are available in a variety of styles and colors. We use a method called a “flexible base system” to install brick patios. This means that we first create a level bed of crushed gravel and sand within a wooden frame as a foundation for the bricks. Next, the bricks are placed to follow the pattern you choose and then the spaces in between each brick are filled with more sand to lock each of them in place. The reason it is called a “flexible base system” is because each brick is independent from the other and no mortar or concrete is used.

Although the term “flexible” may give you pause, rest assured that this method produces a secure patio- the sand is quite effective in locking the bricks tightly together and creates a beautiful finish.

Stone Patios

We also create patios from an assortment of geometric paving stones that are available on the market. Once again, we use the “flexible base system” when working with stone. We tend to shy away from using irregularly shaped stones as they do not lend themselves to the flexible base system very well. (Their uneven shape does not allow the sand to lock them in place effectively.)

Brick or stone patios can look beautiful on their own, but often look best when they are incorporated with a wooden structure.  A wood arbor built over a brick or stone patio creates quite a comfortable setting. Another way to create a stunning outdoor area is to build a deck with stairs that lead down to a brick or stone patio.
